COLLECTION METHODOLOGY

The survey used a multi stage stratified random sample to select households. The 'person aged 12 years or older who has the next birthday' was selected as the respondent.
Beginning in 2001, the NDSHS has used self-completion (drop and collect) and Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) methods. In 2007, there were 19,818 respondents in the drop and collect component (conducted by Roy Morgan Research) and 3,538 in the CATI component (conducted by the Social Research Centre). In 2010, the CATI component was dropped and only the drop and collect was continued (2010 sample 26,648). This has been undertaken by Roy Morgan Research.

The 2010 questionnaire is available at:

COVERAGE

People who live in non-private dwellings, are homeless or live in institutions or at military bases are excluded from the survey sample.
