PURPOSE:
| To obtain information on awareness, attitudes and behaviour in relation to drug use, including alcohol and tobacco as well as illicit drugs. |
DESCRIPTION:
| The National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS) collects information about attitudes towards drugs and drug consumption histories and related behaviours. It also collects information about harms arising from drug use, including occurrence and details of physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse and being put in fear by someone affected by alcohol or illicit drugs. |
DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE:
There is no formal definition of FDV used in this survey.
Aspects of FDV captured in the data are:
- physical abuse;
- sexual abuse;
- verbal abuse; and
- being put in fear.

FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RELATED CONTENT (data items collected)
The following tables provide a detailed analysis of the availability of specified data elements in the data source. The data items have been grouped into four counting units:
1. Context;
2. Person;
3. Incident/Event; and
4. Transaction.
Tables are absent from the entry in cases where the data source contains no data items which relate to the particular counting unit/s.

COLLECTION METHODOLOGY
The survey used a multi stage stratified random sample to select households. The 'person aged 12 years or older who has the next birthday' was selected as the respondent.
Beginning in 2001, the NDSHS has used self-completion (drop and collect) and Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) methods. In 2007, there were 19,818 respondents in the drop and collect component (conducted by Roy Morgan Research) and 3,538 in the CATI component (conducted by the Social Research Centre). In 2010, the CATI component was dropped and only the drop and collect was continued (2010 sample 26,648). This has been undertaken by Roy Morgan Research.

SCOPE/TARGET POPULATION
| The target population is people aged 12 years or older residing in private dwellings in Australia, at the time of the survey. |
COVERAGE
| People who live in non-private dwellings, are homeless or live in institutions or at military bases are excluded from the survey sample. |
